Sun Protection Policy

Dear Parents/Caregivers

We  have a tube of 50+ sun block in our classroom for our girls to use and encourage all our girls to apply sun block before they come to school and reapply during the day as required. If your daughter is sensitive to sun block she is welcome to bring a tube of her own to school (clearly labelled with her name on it) and leave it in the classroom.  Just a reminder to all parents as part of our Sun Protection Policy all girls must wear their blue sun hats and sun block from the months of September to May.

We thank you in advance for your support.

Kindest regards,

Jill and Heather

Cupcakes for Nepal

The mission was cupcake making for a great cause, and the girls nailed it!

The Year 6 ladies held a cupcake stall on Tuesday 25th of August to raise funds to support the Bhadure School in Nepal. In only one recess period, the girls managed to raise a whopping $1,080!

We are so incredibly impressed by the girl’s involvement and the funds they were able to raise in such a short period of time.

You go girls! (By Ms Peace -student teacher)

Canberra Guide Books

This week the girls received their Canberra Guide Books. This task involves the ladies completing a series of activities designed around the places they will be visiting while in Canberra. In doing so, the girls are able to develop their prior knowledge on many of the topics they will be covering during their trip in Week 10.

As the books were being handed out, the room was rife with excitement. The girls were eager to begin immediately, with many taking their laptops to the Library to get started in their lunch break.

Only four weeks to go!

Wilderness Canberra Guide Books

Wilderness Canberra Guide Books 2

Hello from Hannah, our pre-service teacher

Dear Parents,

My name is Hannah and I have been lucky enough to be provided the opportunity to complete my final year placement at Wilderness. I will be joining Mrs. Davis for five weeks, commencing in Week 5. I have been studying a Bachelor of Education (primary/middle), at the University of South Australia. When I graduate in September, I will be qualified to teach Reception to Year ten, with my specialties being in English and Drama.

Throughout my time at the University of South Australia, I have had a wide variety of experiences that have helped me prepare for this. I have worked in a Year 6/7 classroom as well as having the opportunity to teach Year eight, nine and ten English in a senior school. In addition to these placements, I am also a full time Director at an Out of School Hours Care facility. I thoroughly enjoy the rewarding nature of this position as I continue to develop my relationship with teaching.

I am very excited to be invited to Wilderness as I have a strong passion for teaching single gender. I completed my own high school education in an independent girl’s school, and from this learnt the values of being part of a single gender community. This was then extended when I was provided the opportunity to teach the year 6/7 class of all females in a public co-ed school. After having the experience as an educator in a single gender program I quickly realised that I wanted to direct my attention towards learning more about single gender female education.

I wish to thank Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Bradford and all involved in allowing me this unique opportunity. I look forward to getting to know all of you as well as your children. I will endeavour to introduce myself to everyone over the course of my placement, and I ask that you please approach me also.

Kind Regards,

Hannah Peace

Invitation to Year 6 Exhibition – Join us in celebrating your daughters’ acheivements

Last term the girls worked hard to produce life sized models to showcase the work they have done about a migrant who has made a significant contribution to some aspect of life in Australia.

The models are based on a real exhibition called, The Peoplescape- Celebrating Australians, which was presented in Canberra on the roof of Parliament House in 2001, to celebrate the centenary of our Federation.

We would like to invite you to attend our very own Peoplescape exhibition.

When: Week 3, Tuesday 4th August

What time: From 7.30 am to 9.30am

 Where: Senior Library

Tea and coffee will be provided

Please RSVP on the blog as a comment by Friday Week 2.

We hope to see you there.

Community Care Fundraiser

IMG_3959On Thursday last week the Community Care Committee had a very successful fundraiser with over $1000 raised for the Bhadure School in Nepal. A big thank you to all the Year 6’s and their parents for assisting the committee by baking or buying goodies to sell. Congratulations to Georgia Roylett and her committee for their amazing organisational skills, enthusiasm and commitment to ensuring that the day was successful – well done girls!

WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY 22 MAY 2015

Well it’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts talking about walking! Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine.

You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:

  • Walking with them the whole way to school
  • If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop
  • If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.

Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.

Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so get planning your own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 22 May 2015!
